So Your Kid Wants to Build an App? A Guide for Parents and Teachers

Updated: Apr 11, 2022

How to create an app for beginners, resources for parents and teachers

Apps have become very popular over the last few years, and kids today use many apps, either on their computer or on a phone, to do everything from draw pictures to track time. Apps are a great way for kids to get excited about coding and build programs that others can use. AIClub students have built thousands of AI-powered and other apps, including iPhone apps, Android apps, Python apps, and web apps. In this blog post, we answer common questions that parents and teachers have about how kids can get started and build custom apps.

Is it difficult to create an app?

Not really. In our app development classes, we have seen kids as young as in 5th grade create high-quality iPhone apps in IOS using professional coding languages like Swift. These kids create an app in about eight weeks, starting from scratch and without any previous app development knowledge.

Can a kid make an app?

Yes absolutely. We have seen many kids create apps with us. You can see examples of apps that AIClub kids have created here.

How do beginners create apps? How to get started making an app?

The first step is to learn the process of app development. It involves both coding and design. You need to define what your app is about and what it will do, then design the flow of the app - what screens are shown to the user and what the user experience will be, and then prototype, test, and implement your app.

Can I make an app by myself?

Yes, this is possible. All of the kids who have built apps in our classes have done them as individual custom projects, with the mentoring of our teachers. We have also seen kids go on from these classes and build their own custom apps for competition wins, also by themselves. You can see an example of a cool app built by a kid here.

Can a 6-year-old kid make an app?

In some languages, yes. It is possible for kids this age to build apps in block-based languages like Scratch. For professional languages like Swift or Python, we do see some kids this age build apps, but it is more common with kids a bit older - 8 years old and above.

Can I make an app for free? Is it expensive to create an app? How much does it cost to make an app?

Once you have learned a bit about building apps, creating an app does not require any more cost. At that point, it is more about the effort that you need to put into defining, designing, and building out the app itself. Some real-world apps are very expensive to build, but this is because many people contribute to the design and development and the company creating the app needs to pay everyone. If you are building a professional app, yes there will be cost involved. If you are building an app for yourself, to learn and demonstrate your knowledge and solve a problem, it can be done at very little cost.
